How Lebara SIM-only plans work

With a SIM-only plan you keep your current phone and just swap the SIM. Each Lebara plan includes UK minutes and texts, a set amount of data, and an international minutes allowance. The main differences between plans are the amount of data and how many international minutes you get.

A fair usage policy applies to some plans, so check the plan details on Lebara’s site. The 12-month plan is £0.50 cheaper a month on the 5GB plan and £1 cheaper on the 30GB plan. The saving grows to £1.50 on 50GB, £2 on 100GB, £2.50 on Unlimited Data and £3 on Unlimited Plus. Over a year that adds up to £6, £12, £18, £24, £30 or £36. Check on Lebara’s site how the 12-month plan works, including the commitment and how to cancel, before you choose.

Calling abroad

Lebara says its plans include calls to over 50 countries from the UK. At the time of writing the list includes Poland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, India and the USA, among many others. If the country you want to call is not on the list, you need to add credit to your Lebara account. Always check the full list and any usage limits on Lebara’s site before you buy.

Using your plan abroad

Lebara says you can use your UK plan allowances while roaming in the EU or India at no extra cost, up to 30GB. Outside Europe and India you need a roaming add-on or pay-as-you-go credit. Check Lebara’s roaming rates finder for the country you are travelling to.

Step-by-step: how to pick the right plan

  1. Check your real data use. Look in your phone’s settings for how much mobile data you used over the last few months. Many people use far less than their current plan allows, so a smaller plan can save money.
  2. Count your international calls. If you only call abroad now and then, 100 minutes may be enough. If you call family every week, a plan with 500 or unlimited minutes may suit you better.
  3. Check the country list. Make sure the country you call is included, and whether the allowance covers landlines, mobiles or both.
  4. Compare with what you pay now. Add up your current monthly cost, including any out-of-bundle charges, and compare it with the plan you are considering.
  5. Check your current contract. If you are still in a contract, leaving early may cost you. Wait until it ends, or check the exit fee first.
  6. Keep your number. Text PAC to 65075 to get a Porting Authorisation Code from your current provider, then give it to Lebara when you switch.

Which Lebara plan might suit you?

  • Very light users: the 5GB plan is the cheapest on the list and can work if you mostly use Wi-Fi. It has 1,000 UK minutes and texts rather than unlimited.
  • Light users: the 30GB plan can be a low-cost option if you use a moderate amount of data and make a few international calls.
  • Regular callers abroad: the 50GB plan includes 500 international minutes for a modest step up in price.
  • Heavy callers and streamers: the 100GB plan includes unlimited international minutes, which can be handy if you talk to family abroad often.
  • Data-hungry households: Unlimited Data and Unlimited Plus are for people who use a lot of mobile data. Unlimited Data has 100 international minutes, while Unlimited Plus has unlimited international minutes. If you call abroad a lot but do not need unlimited data, compare the 100GB plan, which includes unlimited international minutes for a lower price than Unlimited Data.

Money-saving tips

  • Do not pay for more data than you use. Moving down a plan can save up to several pounds a month.
  • Compare the 30-day and 12-month prices before you buy.
  • Use Wi-Fi at home and at work to keep your mobile data use down.
  • Check Lebara’s site for any offers, rewards or referral schemes, as these change from time to time.
  • Set a reminder to review your mobile plan once a year.
