Most people use either a supermarket loyalty card or a cashback app, not both. That leaves money on the table, because the two work in different ways and can often be combined on the same shop. The trick is doing it without overspending or making life complicated. This guide shows a simple layering plan for UK shoppers. Updated October 2026.

How stacking works

Think of your weekly shop as having up to four layers of savings:

  1. Layer 1, loyalty card prices and points. Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar give members lower prices on selected items, plus points. ASDA Rewards works differently: there is no member pricing, and you earn cash by completing missions in the app.
  2. Layer 2, how you pay. Gift card cashback apps such as Cheddar credit cashback when you buy a supermarket gift card, which you then spend on your shop.
  3. Layer 3, product offers. Receipt-scanning apps such as Shopmium, CheckoutSmart and GreenJinn pay you for buying specific products you were already planning to buy.
  4. Layer 4, the basics. Buying only what you need and comparing prices still beats any cashback rate.

The loyalty schemes in brief

SchemeHow it worksMain saving
Tesco Clubcard1 point per £1 spent, plus Clubcard PricesMember prices on selected items
Sainsbury’s NectarPoints on spend, plus Nectar PricesMember prices, personalised offers
ASDA RewardsMissions earn cash into a CashpotCash back on selected missions

Point values and offers change, so check each app for current details.

A worked example

Imagine a £100 weekly shop at Tesco. This is an illustration using round numbers, not a promise:

  • Clubcard Prices: savings depend on what is in your basket, so we have left them out.
  • Clubcard points: 100 points at about 1p each is roughly £1.
  • Gift card cashback: at 3.5% (the rate Cheddar showed for Tesco in store on 11 October 2026), buying a £100 gift card gives around £3.50.
  • Product offers: two receipt-app offers at roughly £1 each is about £2.

If every layer lines up that is around £6.50 a week, or roughly £338 over a year. In reality offers will not be available every week and rates move, so a more cautious expectation might be half that or less. Even so, it comes from shopping you were already doing.

How to stack savings: step by step

  1. Join the loyalty scheme for your main supermarket. It is free and usually the biggest single saving because member prices apply to your basket.
  2. Write your shopping list first. Then check the loyalty app and your receipt apps for offers that match items on it.
  3. Decide how you will pay. If you want gift card cashback, buy a gift card for the amount you expect to spend, no more.
  4. Check whether you still earn loyalty points when paying with a gift card. Rules vary between retailers, so confirm in the scheme’s terms before you rely on both.
  5. Scan your loyalty card or app at the till so member prices apply.
  6. Keep your receipt and upload it to any receipt apps for offers you used, within the claim window.
  7. Review once a month. Note what you actually earned and drop any app that is not worth the effort.

Common pitfalls

  • Buying things just for the cashback. A saving on something you did not need is still money spent.
  • Stockpiling gift cards. Gift card purchases through Cheddar are final, and unspent balances can expire or be hard to use. Read our Cheddar safety review for the risks.
  • Assuming everything stacks. Some offers have rules about which other promotions can be combined, and each receipt can usually only be claimed once.
  • Missing expiry dates. Cashpots, vouchers and offers can run out.
  • Spending more time than it is worth. If checking five apps saves 50p, simplify.

A simple setup for most households

  • Light touch: your supermarket’s loyalty app plus one receipt app.
  • Medium: add gift card cashback for the shop you do most often.
  • Full stack: add a second receipt app, but only if you enjoy it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a loyalty card and a cashback app on the same shop?

Often yes, because they work in different ways, but terms vary. Check each scheme’s rules, especially if you pay with a gift card.

Is Tesco Clubcard better than ASDA Rewards?

They are different. Clubcard gives member prices and points on most shops, while ASDA Rewards pays cash for completing missions. Which is better depends on where you shop and how much time you want to spend.

Do I still get Clubcard or Nectar points if I pay with a gift card?

This can depend on the retailer’s terms, so check before assuming. Scanning your card at the till is the first step either way.

How much can I realistically save by stacking?

It depends on how much you spend and how many offers match your basket. As a rough guide, a few pounds a week is possible for some households, but it is not guaranteed.

Is it worth the effort?

If you spend a few minutes a week and only claim on items you would buy anyway, it can be. If it becomes a chore, scale back.
